Thank you to all those who supported Sport Waikato/WPA Partnership Day ‘Beyond Sport’. We had 160 people attend which is getting close to a record for a WPA event. I would like to acknowledge the great work the Sport Waikato team did to put together such a varied and engaging programme. Dr Lucy Hone is definitely someone I would like to hear speak again. I thought Kirsten Petrie and the other guy were good too! Our next event is on the 2nd of September with Shay Wright.
I am sure you have all read the Pūaotanga document released last week. I think it is a succinct summary of the main issues and challenges facing the education sector at the moment. The recommendations and staged approaches to address the issues also make interesting reading but I think we need to see it for what it is; an unrealistic wish list. I am not saying I disagree with the findings; they are a great summary of what is needed. But I feel this document has created false expectations of what we can achieve through our ‘Collective Agreement’ negotiations and what the government is going to pay for. The cost of implementing half the stage 1 recommendation is prohibitive, keep in mind there was no extra funding in this year’s budget for education. Does that give an indication of the government’s view of Pūaotanga? These views are mine alone and not representative of WPA’s position relating to Pūaotanga.
Congratulations to Leslie Lomas who was elected as our interim President. Leslie will be a fantastic leader of our association and I wish her all the best for her time in the role.
Just a reminder this is your Mailout. If there is anything you would like to share, e.g. readings, links to interesting websites etc. please feel free to send them through to Chrissy so we can add them.
Have an awesome weekend.

(outgoing President)

A notice from the Waikato AP/DP Association
We are excited to bring you our Waikato AP/DP Connections Day.
This event focuses on delving into ways of improving your wellbeing, managing stress and finding better balance in your life.
It is being held at the Boatshed Cafe out at Karapiro 9am - 3pm (you are welcome to stay on after the event and enjoy a drink with your colleagues if you would like).
There will be a guest speaker, spot prizes and the best company in the Waikato ;)
We only have 100 spots available so you will need to get in quick.
The cost will be around $120 - $150 depending on numbers.
Please note: Due to planning and budget constraints this is likely to be non-refundable. If you sign up and then can't make it (unless you can find someone to fill your spot) your school will be invoiced.
