Mere Berryman, Ngāi Tūhoe, Ngāti Awa, Ngāti Whare
After teaching for more than 20 years, Mere began researching in the 90s. This work focussed on collaborations with schools, Māori students, their families and communities through relational and responsive literacy and behavioural interventions. Mere is now a Professor at the University of Waikato and the Director of Poutama Pounamu, a provider of professional development and ongoing research. Mere tutors at a Masters level and in teacher preparation, she also provides Masters and PhD supervision.
Critical Considerations for our Schooling Futures: Stronger Together
While racism has begun to be talked about more openly since March 15th, our students have been having this conversation for some time. They know about racism because many are routinely affected by it. It is my belief that whatever their ethnicity, learners must be able to receive education without having to compromise who they are. This means that bias, prejudice, assimilation and racism must be up for discussion and the implications clearly understood, for ourselves, for our learners, for schooling and for wider society.
Through the use of cultural relationships, and critical contexts for learning, we will consider why this is important and how this conversation can begin to play out in ways that are respectful and responsive to the cultures of the communities with whom we work. Through such relationships, mana ōrite can be achieved and learning can begin to be accelerated for many more diverse groups of learners.

Curriculum, Progress and Achievement Advisory Report.
The Curriculum, Progress and Achievement Advisory Group has released its report which provides a clear direction for the future of curriculum, teaching and learning. There are separate recommendations for Māori and English medium settings and their advice makes it clear that to achieve our vision for education we need to change the way we use our national curriculum. You are invited to attend a session with Pauline Cleaver, Associate Deputy Secretary on these recommendations and next steps.

National Education and Learning Priorities session
Subject: National Education and Learning Priorities session
Kia ora koutou
We have managed to secure a second session to unpack the draft National Education and Learning Priorities (NELP). These are a set of priorities for practice in places of learning, from early childhood through to tertiary education and training. The NELP is a statutory document enabled by the Education Act 1989, and expresses the Government’s expectations of places of learning to improve wellbeing, equity and inclusion in education. As such, those in governance positions in the early learning and compulsory education sector must have regard to the NELP priorities. Can I ask you to promote this to your respective members?
This session is open to all i.e. teachers, principals, Board members and any members of the public who are interested.
Date: 21 November
Venue: Ministry of Education, 19 Home Straight,
Hamilton
Time: 5.30-8.00 pm
Please RSVP: businessservices.Hamilton@education.govt.nz for catering purposes
