Conspiracy Theory - Hekia Parata

Hekia Parata has announced she is not going to stand for Parliament next year… just after John Coulam resigns from Principalship.

Is there a link between these two events? Is Ms Parata so devastated with the loss of JC that she can no longer face the job? Does this explain why Catholic schools have done so well under this government?

My sources say… probably no link.

Trots Night

It was another hugely enjoyable night on Friday. Thanks to John Coulam and his team for superb organisation and barrels of fun

The first sulky race was a close fought affair, but I think it is fair to say that your humble Communications Officer Pat Poland came first. With his horse. Hamish, Marcus, and Craig – you gave it your best shot, guys. Just face the fact that experience was the winner.

Help! PTA Fundraising

A school is looking for PTA Fundraising information – guidelines, responsibilities, etc. If you have anything relevant, please email to principal@deanwell.school.nz and I will pass it on.

Help!

A school has made the following request:

Is anyone willing to share their policies on Sexual harassment / harassment. These policies are currently up for review at our school and we would be interested in what other schools have documented.

Responses to principal@deanwell.school.nz and I was pass them on.

Term 4 Catch Up Day - Cheryl Doig

Thursday November 4

Future focused schools: What and How?

Cheryl will take us on a quick romp into the world of exponential technologies and the global changing landscape; explore the implications for schools and leadership; and dig deeper into the trend towards collaboration. During all three sessions there will be a mix of 'deep dives', interaction with peers and development of strategies for your unique environment. No matter what sort of school setting you are in, you will be challenged and encouraged to move ideas to action.

9.10 - 10.10 An Outwards Mindset: Global Trends

Key drivers of change are forcing us to deconstruct our industrial model of education and remix it to meet the needs for a vastly different world. In this session Cheryl will explore the significant changes affecting the world, including the impact of Exponential Technologies. Are you personally and professionally aware of these? What are the implications for learners?

11.00 - 12.00 Leadership of a Learning Ecosystem

Leaders of the future will need to remix their capabilities, pivot like never before and embrace new relationships. We will explore the learning ecosystem of schooling and what this means for you as a leader of change in an increasingly complex world. What capabilities need to be developed, strengthened and abandoned? What about those who will be the leaders after you? Will your legacy be a liability or a springboard?

2.00 - 3.00 Leading Collaboration: What Really Matters

In the final session of the day we will focus on collaboration as one of the key ingredients of a learning ecosystem. What are the positives and pitfalls for schools, clusters and CoLs. Why might we collaborate and when? What are examples of successful collaboration in education and business? Where to next?

Register here.

CORE Breakfast

The next CORE Breakfast is on 10 November with Janelle Riki-Waaka presenting a seminar and workshop session on Innovative Pathways for Māori achieving educational success as Māori.

The focus of this breakfast seminar will explore innovative ways that schools can create environments to empower Māori students and raise achievement for all students in the process. Janelle will discuss several avenues of support for school leaders and teachers to enhance their culturally responsive practices, and strengthen their relationships with Māori students and their whānau.

During the workshop, participants will be supported to develop a Responsiveness Plan for their schools aimed at empowering all learners and their whānau to engage with their school and feel empowered in all aspects of their achievement. We will also explore how schools can form stronger connections with students and their whānau through developing ‘flipped’ curriculum support and access to learning support outside of school hours.

Register here.

A Reading…

A two minute read on why children who live in poverty – and this is an increasing proportion of families in NZ – are disadvantaged at school. Heart-breaking.

Rant – Special Needs Transport

The Ministry of Education (and the Government) certainly supplies plenty of fodder for this part of the Monday Mailing…

School bus drivers can no longer fasten or release the seat belts of children in their care. Parents and school staff must do this onerous task.

This has come about because of the Vulnerable Children’s Act.

So… we can trust the driver to have a child in their care for considerable periods of time, often a child on their own. We trust them to drive the vehicle in a safe manner. But we cannot trust them to seat belt a child.

While I accept this could be great protection for the driver, I still think the world has gone mad.

What next? Teachers cannot do up a child’s shoe laces?

Leadership…

A Thought…

From Geoff at Puketaha School:

Corrosion

The things that break all at once aren’t really a problem. You note that they’ve broken, and then you fix them.

The challenge is corrosion. Things that slowly fade, that eventually become a hassle--it takes effort and judgment to decide when it’s time to refurbish them.

And yes, the same thing is true for relationships, customer service and all the 'soft' stuff that matters so much.
