Principals supporting Principals… Principals supporting Principles!

Kia Ora

I hope you all have a relaxing (haha) end to your term! It sure has been a hectic Term 1.

A message from Lesley

Tēnā tātou katoa
Ngā mihi mahana ki a koutou katoa.
Warm greetings to you all as we approach the end of Term 1.  What a busy term this has been as many of us are dealing with the impact of Covid-19.  The constant reorganising of staff coupled with the large numbers of students who have been absent from school has, for many of us, provided additional stress and pressure to our already busy work lives.  I hope that you are able to find time to rest and relax during the upcoming holiday break.
Today the Prime Minister announced that, for now, we will be remaining at the Red traffic light setting.  I must admit that I was happy not to make any further changes to our school safety measures for the remainder of the term.
Registrations for the WPA Term 2 Connections Day are open on the WPA website.  Shay Wright is our guest speaker in Term 2 and he will be coming along to inspire us on Thursday the 16th June at Claudelands Event Centre.  This is a great opportunity to hear an awesome presenter and to meet up with your principal colleagues outside of school.  A reminder too that WPA subscriptions for 2022 are now due.
Thank you for your support and have a great remainder of the term.
Kia haumaru te noho,
Stay safe and well.

Ngā manaakitanga,

Lesley

Term 2 Connections Day – Shay Wright

Māori generally fall within the bottom 80% of indicators that the New Zealand' Government uses to measure wellbeing, and Māori are nearly three times as likely to be unemployed and/or convicted of a criminal offence.

Shay is working to empower the next generation of Maori entrepreneurs and leaders through the organisation he co-founded, Te Whare Hukahuka.

From the Far North iwi of Te Rarawa, Shay has been a champion for indigenous empowerment and leadership his whole life. He is particularly passionate about purpose-driven business and social enterprise. Shay worked in the Māori business development at The Icehouse, where he learnt a lot about start-ups, market validation and business models. In 2016, Shay was named in Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia-Pacific for his efforts, and in 2019, was named an Obama Fellow.

Shay’s involvement with Inspiring Stories has been long-standing. He has attended and/or spoken at Festival for the Future multiple times. Shay was the inaugural winner of The Impact Award for Enterprise in 2019, and is a sought after speaker represented on Inspiring Speakers – the social enterprise speaker bureau run by Inspiring Stories.

Learning Lab

Last week I did some learning around ‘Echo Chambers’. The echo chamber effect occurs online when a harmonious group of people amalgamate and develop tunnel vision. In discussions of news media, an echo chamber refers to situations in which beliefs are amplified or reinforced by communication and repetition inside a closed system and insulated from rebuttal. I felt this may be an interesting read as this is something that could and does happen within schools.

NZEI

Our vision and goal are that principals’ wellbeing and professional growth is well supported, and that there will be sufficient resourcing available to address the work demands placed on principals. This is the new future we want to create.

The claims are based on long-standing issues and themes that you have identified and are what we will campaign on and negotiate. Voting on the claim is your opportunity to provide direct input into this process. Ultimately the success of our campaign and negotiations will come down to our collective action - we can do this!
