I hope that the past two weeks have not been too crazy for all of you, although I am sure that the Omicron wave has without a doubt hit most schools by now. Keep safe and look after yourselves!

A message from Lesley
Tēnā koutou katoa,
Greetings to you all as we head towards the end of Term 1. What a term it has been so far! I hope that you are all safe and well and that your school community is coping with the challenges of this Covid-19 pandemic.
Many colleagues that I have spoken with recently have shared their experience of Covid fatigue. In our role as school leaders we are addressing the daily business demands of school life and again this term this has been exacerbated by the additional demands placed on us by the pandemic. Please take care of yourselves these last few weeks of term 1.
Change is inevitable for us in our choice of vocation. We await the announcements being made by the Prime Minister on Wednesday and no doubt further changes to the Covid-19 guidelines will be made. Again, schools will be relied on to put these changes into effect and communicate these to our school community.
In the meantime, kia haumaru te noho,
Stay safe everyone.
Ngā manaakitanga,
Lesley

Term 2 Connections Day – Shay Wright
Māori generally fall within the bottom 80% of indicators that the New Zealand' Government uses to measure wellbeing, and Māori are nearly three times as likely to be unemployed and/or convicted of a criminal offence.
Shay is working to empower the next generation of Maori entrepreneurs and leaders through the organisation he co-founded, Te Whare Hukahuka.
From the Far North iwi of Te Rarawa, Shay has been a champion for indigenous empowerment and leadership his whole life. He is particularly passionate about purpose-driven business and social enterprise. Shay worked in the Māori business development at The Icehouse, where he learnt a lot about start-ups, market validation and business models. In 2016, Shay was named in Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia-Pacific for his efforts, and in 2019, was named an Obama Fellow.
Shay’s involvement with Inspiring Stories has been long-standing. He has attended and/or spoken at Festival for the Future multiple times. Shay was the inaugural winner of The Impact Award for Enterprise in 2019, and is a sought after speaker represented on Inspiring Speakers – the social enterprise speaker bureau run by Inspiring Stories.

Let them be scientists!
The key to inspiring children to pursue science can be found in the curious and inquisitive spirit we all tap into as we first discover the world. Wendy Hawkins demonstrates why we need to inject a more experimental approach into our science curriculum to ensure that we stay connected.
