Tēnā tātou katoa
Ngā mihi ki a koutou mō te wiki o te reo Māori
No doubt you have been busy settling staff and students back into your schools at Alert Level 2. I hope that has gone well for you. We are pleasantly surprised at how resilient our staff and students are and how quickly everyone has adapted since our return to school last week, with Alert Level 2 being more like business as usual.
Te wiki o te reo Māori has been celebrated in Aotearoa since 1975. This special week is an opportunity for the concentrated celebration and promotion of te reo Māori, helping to secure its future as a living, dynamic, and rich language. Many of your kaiako will have planned exciting lessons to reinforce te reo Māori with their learners this week; to build new knowledge of te reo Māori or to consolidate what has already been taught. While it is fantastic to have an identified week every year to focus on te reo Māori, the challenge we have as educators in Aotearoa is to ensure that te reo Māori becomes a natural component of our everyday lives, at school, at home, and in the community.
Kia kaha te reo.
Ngā manaakitanga,
Lesley
