Welcome to Term 3. Marcus Freke, our outgoing WPA President has now taken up his new role as Director of Education for Waikato. Marcus has recently communicated that MOE desires to work more closely with the school sector. As Principals, we look forward to the further realisation of this with Marcus at the helm.
The WPA is all about 'Principals supporting Principals'. This very much drives the work that we do. We also work with others in this endeavour, including NZPF.
As a result of the high level of support shown by Waikato Principals during Perry Rush's road tour visits to our region, the entire NZPF executive is traveling to Hamilton on Thursday 19th August to meet with local Principals. This visit is to demonstrate NZPF support for Principals in the Waikato region, to connect with us, and discuss any local and national issues of concern so that NZPF can build a real sense of the issues they need to advocate for in Wellington.
You are invited to come along to the discussion session with NZPF being held at the Verandah Cafe, Hamilton lake, from 2pm till 4pm in the afternoon on Thursday 19th August. A more social session will follow, with drinks and nibbles from 4pm onwards. There is no cost to attend and registration details are available below and on our website. This is a fantastic opportunity to share our issues and concerns as Principals with the NZPF executive team.
Congratulations to the 10 successful recipients of the U1 and U2 WPA road trip scholarships. We look forward to seeing you on our road trip to Otago.
Have a great beginning to Term 3.
Ngā mihi
Lesley Lomas

Shay Wright (Te Rarawa, Ngāpuhi, Ngāruahine)
Shay is a Māori social entrepreneur and co-founder of Te Whare Hukahuka, an award-winning social enterprise developing Māori leadership for tomorrow. Their programmes combine entrepreneurship, innovation, education and indigenous knowledge with teaching community leaders practical skills to lead community change and grow world class organisations.
Shay grew up in the rural Far North, born into a family of teachers. After his own schoolyard businesses, it was his experiences at The University of Auckland and The Icehouse that led to Te Whare Hukahuka. Shay also started his governance journey young, as a founding trustee of the teacher recruitment organisation, Teach First NZ. He now holds advisory board appointments to the Government’s Maori Economic Development Advisory Board, the Kahui Māori for the Science for Technological Innovation National Science Challenge, and The Impact Initiative’s Sector Working Group.
Shay has been named in the 2016 Forbes Asia ‘30 Under 30’ list of Social Entrepreneurs and has been a finalist and winner of many national awards.
Shay will be running three sessions to explore some of the principles that he learned and utilised while at school, ways to develop Maori leadership and ways that schools can build cultural capacity.
- Session 1 - From schoolyard hustler to Head Boy to social entrepreneur.
- Session 2 - Developing the next generation of Māori leadership
- Session 3 - Fostering cultural inclusiveness and cultural capacity in our schools
