Principals supporting Principals… Principals supporting Principles!

Kia Ora

Happy Term 4!

For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Chrissy Wakeman and I am the Principal at Orini Combined School. This term I am taking over the Communications Portfolio for the WPA as Tony Mangan heads off to enjoy his retirement. Tony has done a phenomenal job at keeping everyone up to date on all things Education over the past few years through his role within the WPA so a huge thanks to him – these are big shoes to fill!

Just a reminder that these Monday Mailings are created for you, so if there is anything you want to see more of, less of or share please get in touch with me at chrissy@orini.school.nz so that we can make this happen.

I hope you all have an amazing start to this hectic term!

Kind regards
Chrissy Wakeman
Orini Combined School

A message from our President – Marcus Freke

Kia Ora Kotou

I hope everyone is looking forward to term 4. Term 4 is always a busy one and there are a lot of issues to get our heads around.

We have new editor for the our Monday Mailout. Chrissy Wakeman has taken over from Tony Mangan so if you want anything shared with the association email her at chrissy@orini.school.nz

I am aware there is still some uncertainty around the Teacher Aide Collective Agreement settlement. If you are unsure how to proceed I encourage you contact Ian Leckie. It is part of his role to work through things with principals and he is happy to meet with principals and support with the developing new contracts. My understanding is all contracts need to be sorted by the 18th of November.

Our next Connection Day is November 12th. We have Kevin Bigger presenting and he will motivate and get us thinking about what can be for 2021.

Our Schools Challenge Trots night is locked in for the 6th of November. Start planning your costumes and practising your dance moves.

NZEI are having the Teacher Registration dinner on the 27th of November. It’s a great event so lock it into your diary if you have teachers gaining full registration this year.

We have our provisional funding for 2021. When you are planning your spending for next year please remember to ask our Business Partners to quote on the products and services you need. All the things the WPA do are made possible by the support they give us.

If you are aware of any of our principal colleagues resigning at the end of this year please let me know so we can acknowledge them at our last Connection Day.

Kevin Biggar – November 12th Connections Day

If you ever thought that you couldn’t do it Kevin is living proof of whatever the mind can believe, it can achieve. From the comfort of his couch, Kevin dared to dream and set himself some goals that for most of us would be outrageous.

Kevin Biggar was a strategy consultant with The Boston Consulting Group before he left the corporate world to take part in the world’s toughest test of endurance - the trans-Atlantic Rowing race. An unusual choice for anyone but particularly someone who hadn’t rowed before and was prone to sea-sickness!

Together with his rowing partner Jamie Fitzgerald he then went on to undertake a much tougher challenge - the first ever unsupported trek from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole and back.

Since then he has been the CEO of a software startup and has written or co-written three books ‘The Oarsome Adventures of a Fat Boy Rower’ (the Sunday Star Times best sports book of 2008) ‘Escape to the Pole’ (2010), and ‘First Crossings’ all published by Random House. Kevin was also the co-host of the TVNZ series ‘First Crossings’ and ‘Intrepid NZ’ recreating historic adventures in NZ.

Kevin has spent the last fifteen years continuing his fascination with performance, personal transformation and the psychology of teams. His advice about how to unleash your potential - shared in highly visual and entertaining presentations have made a lasting impact on thousands of people in New Zealand and Australia.
