Principals supporting Principals… Principals supporting Principles!

Kia Ora

Please find this week’s Monday Mailing below.

Welcome to week 10.

The politicians are beginning to tell us what they are going to give to improve education. Forget the promise of extra teacher aides, what we really need is an increase in the overall funding that goes directly to schools. This will allow us to make decisions on specific needs of our schools.

Even though it has been a strange year I hope it has been a positive term. Make sure you give yourself time for yourself and family.

Now open: the registration for the trots night (WPA School’s Challenge). Remember this is limited so get in early. It is always a good night for staff to let their hair down.

Have a great week.

Kia kaha

Remember this is your newsletter. Again if you would like to share a reading, opinion or an event feel free to contact me.

Trots Night

Asthma Education Sessions

Kia ora from Asthma Waikato

We are offering free asthma education sessions for staff in the Waikato region, either in person or via Zoom, in order to ensure that kids with asthma in our region are as safe as they can be. Our focus is kids aged 0-15 years.

We have been reaching out to schools to offer a session but unfortunately, we are often met with resistance at the reception desk. We understand schools are busy, but our education sessions ensure that staff reduce the risk of having to deal with a potentially life-threatening asthma attack on their watch. We know that staff attend first aid training, but in our experience, asthma requires more than a 5 minute spot amidst a first aid refresher. We know that people think they know about asthma already – but in our experience most people know very little.

1 in 7 kids have asthma in NZ, and sadly 77 people still die from asthma every year in NZ. The key to making sure asthma doesn’t result in another statistic hinges largely on prevention, as once a child has a entered the moderate to severe stage of an asthma flare-up, that’s where things get very dangerous.

So, as well as what to do in an emergency, we teach the staff in schools so much more.

Our 30 minute session teaches them:

  • What asthma actually is
  • The difference between the key medicines used to treat it and which ones should not be seen at school
  • Correct technique to administer the inhalers
  • Action plans, asthma policies, what each child with asthma in that school should have
  • Red flags – when to act early so that this child doesn’t end up in an asthma emergency
  • Asthma first aid
  • Asthma triggers
  • All about our service (which is free) and ensuring families know they can come to us
  • Q&A

We also provide an Asthma First Aid poster, wording for an email to send to families and any

support that is needed after our session.

The entire teaching staff need not attend – we can just teach a few who can pass the message

on. Or we can do the session viz Zoom and then record it and send it to the school so that

others can watch it at a time that suits.

We are here to help. If you wish to discuss further, then please do let us know.
