I’ve had some interest reflections from my colleagues this week. My junior teachers have been saying how settled the children at the start of the day. They think it is because the parents aren’t escorting the students to class and hanging around. It means the teachers have a chance to talk to the children, not the parents, and they seem to settle better with no one to bounce their anxiety off. The older kids seem really settled too. One of the team thought it might be the lining up at 9AM and administering the sanitiser helps. They go into class in an orderly way and engage with their teacher. I said to one of my ‘20 something’ teachers that we always made the kids line when I was teaching. Her response was ‘maybe there’s something in that old school stuff’. Our parents are very proud of how brave and resilient their children are walking into school by themselves so everyone is a winner. It’s a balance though. Part of our philosophy is to welcome our parents into the school, after all we are meant to be part of the community. Once again COVID has provided us with an opportunity and a challenge how can we maintain the new-found independence of our students without alienating our parents.

We now have confirmed dates for the NZPF/APPA conference in Melbourne next year. The new dates for the Trans-Tasman conference will be 20 to 23 July 2021. We have already made inquiries about changing the dates for the accommodation and the executive will meet in the next few weeks to determine if we can provide the same support as we offered for this year.

Best of luck for the second week of Alert Level 2. I hope everyone has an enjoyable long weekend, I think it’s just in time.

Opportunity for your students.

The Asia New Zealand Foundation is offering 4 different online student workshops for free that are suitable for students learning in the classroom or from home.

We would appreciate if you could share the below to your teachers colleagues and the WPA network.

• Taiko drumming workshop – Music and Japanese
• Rakugo workshop - Drama, English and Japanese
• Bollywood dance workshop – Dance, social studies and drama
• Wushu Kung Fu workshop – PE, Mandarin and social studies.

Delivery

Online workshops will be delivered via a combination of live streaming and pre-recorded videos using the same platforms your school uses for online learning. Workshops are delivered by external organisations.

Each workshop is designed for one lesson (45-60 mins).

PART 1:

Protect Your Students Online While Learning at Home

If your students are expected to engage in online learning while at home, then you will likely want to extend your filtering to ensure they are safe and focused while doing so. Certainly if you've sent any school devices (Chrome, Win, Mac, iPad) or Google accounts home, you will want to ensure they are filtered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Family Zone is offering their filtering and classroom tools free of charge until the end of term 2. Currently they have over 300 schools in NZ using their services and 1,300 globally.

In most scenarios, protection can be deployed to students even if devices are already with students at home.

The purpose of the resources is to ensure that existing school staff can access and provide quality PE learning for their families during this difficult period, in a manner that is completely user friendly and very low on tech requirements.

Lesson Plans will be delivered in two formats - one for teachers identifying curriculum aspects (currently mapped to the Australian ACARA curriculum), and a second version for parents and students to follow, that can be easily transferred to other communication platforms or simply printed and sent in hard copy.

All plans will include structured lesson guides, physical activity and game content via Moovosity's simple to use app, learning intentions, easy to follow instructions and suggested extras to keep students and families moving.

To take advantage of these free resources, follow these steps:

1. DOWNLOAD THE MOOVOSITY APP by searching 'Moovosity' in the Apple App Store. (Android users and families will be given access to an online library)
2. REGISTER YOUR DETAILS below to receive the full term scope and sequence, lesson plans and resources, parent information and student reflection form. Lesson plans will be created on a fortnightly basis and sent directly to the registered email address.

Upcoming staff PD
