From our President:

Coronavirus

Have you considered what your schools response will be if COVID-19 (Novel Coronavirus) hits our shores, or worst still in your setting? I was asked by the Waikato Times what our Pandemic Plan was and other than rattling off the Infectious Disease response, I was found wanting…..but being resourceful I opened up the Guidelines while on the phone and was able to give some background information.

Please find attached the MoE Guidelines for a Pandemic Response along with a link to the MoE COVID-19 Information for schools. Just something to have in the back of your mind…have you got the appropriate supplies for dealing with isolation to protect all those involved?

Leading Local Curriculum Design

The Leading local curriculum design in the revised technology learning area guide is part of the Leading local curriculum guide series released in early 2019. This guide takes school leaders through the change in the technology learning area together with the high-impact practices to help design and implement this learning in their school curriculum.

We are seeking feedback from school leaders, and teachers on this guide – comments can be sent to digi.tech@education.govt.nz by 31 March.

Feedback will be collated and the final version is planned to be promoted to schools in Term 2, 2020.

Sport Waikato Programme

Whaanau Kori, Tamariki Ora – Active Families, Healthy Kids

Whaanau Kori Tamariki Ora is a free lifestyle programme throughout the Waikato for families with children aged between 2 and 10. We visit whaanau (usually in their home) for up to twelve months and support them in setting and achieving their personal lifestyle goals. The service is friendly and non-judgemental, and we look at sleep, screen time, activity and nutrition amongst other things. We support parental confidence in setting healthy boundaries and making simple lifestyle adjustments.

Just like our Energizers in schools, our goal is to support growing healthy tamariki. If a child is sleeping well, eating well and keeping active, they have a better foundation for learning.

Success Story:

Client X is a lovely young 9-year-old girl who was lacking in self-confidence after being bullied at school. A family history of cancer, diabetes, and obesity are challenges that concern Mum and their main goal was to lose weight and get healthier as a family.

I am so proud of this young ladies’ efforts when it comes to her school and being more physically active. She has participated in swimming lessons, competed in school athletics, and she’s also dancing and being more active at home.

Her self-confidence has grown so much that she entered in a singing competition late last year and made it into the semi-finals. We continue to work with this family and are excited to track their progress.

Families can self-refer via our website https://www.sportwaikato.org.nz/programmes/whaanau-kori.aspx or can be referred by their medical centre.

For enquiries, please contact Active Families Lead Coordinator Mandy McCabe ph:021 806 254 or email: mandym@sportwaikato.org.nz

I am always happy to meet with staff and parents/caregivers if they want more information.
