From NZEI

By now you will have seen the initial claims that NZEI are taking to negotiate for the Principals’ collective agreement.

These claims are transformative and will lead to significant improvements in outcomes for students, teacher and principal workloads, better retention and recruitment of teachers and principals as well as making a real positive difference to the safety and well-being of principals, teachers and support staff across the primary sector.

Remember though that these are claims, not a settlement. Please make attending the paid union meetings in your area your number one priority. It is absolutely vital that we send the government and the Ministry the message that Principals are turning out in big numbers to endorse the claims. We are aiming for 100% turnout for member principals at the March paid union meetings in the Waikato.

The key claims are;

  • 16% pay increase over two years
  • 1:25 staffing ratio for year 4-8 (reduced from 1:29)
  • Introduce professional practice time for 20 hours per term (replacing CRT)
  • Roll based entitlement for SENCO FTTE
  • Increase the number of resource teachers (RTLits and RT Maori especially)
  • Increase the minimum professional leadership staffing to 0.5 FTTE
  • Ensure that all schools have at least two fulltime staff (one may be support staff)
  • Minimum principal grade to be U3
  • Teaching principals to be entitled to professional practice time (currently no CRT for teaching principals)

Please note that if you are a non-member of NZEI now is a great time to join! Some of the claims will not be passed on to non-members for a period of up to 12 months.
