Principals supporting Principals… Principals supporting Principles!

Kia Ora

Please find this week’s Monday Mailing below.

Last week the executive met to finalise activities for 2018. A few things to take note of.

  • The elections for the 2018/2019 executive ( 7 executive positions and 1 President) will be in February next year. This is the first year where the executive positions will be a 2 year appointment. If you are considering standing look out early next year when nominations will be called for.
  • The first Connection Day (Catch up, notice change of name) will be an overnighter at Wairakei. This will be subsidised ($10,000) by the WPA and the major presenter will be Mark Osborne. If you want to register for this, you can go to the WPA website. The other three Connection Days also have great speakers coming (see below). Again these are subsidised ($30,000) by the WPA.
  • The road trip next year is to Melbourne. The WPA will be subsidising this to the tune of $40,000. If you want to register for this you can go to the WPA website.
  • In 2019 the Road Trip will be to the South Island.

Rant – National Standards

What is happening!!! Are they going, or are they somewhere in between? How can the government say before the election that National Standards would be gone, and now say that if schools want to keep them, they can!!!!

Does this put the decision in the hands of school Boards of Trustees. We know when they were introduced, that many Principals and staff were put in an uncomfortable situation when they disagreed with their boards. Is this where we are heading back to? If a board wants them to stay and the Principal and staff want them to go, will this now cause friction between the parties? If we want National standards to disappear off the education agenda, we need very clear decision making that kicks them for touch so that they cannot be introduced again further down the track. We should be reminding the government about their clear stance before the election and tell them to remove them completely. If this is not done in a decisive fashion I can see them returning if there is a change of government in the near future.

Note: Opinions expressed in The Rant are those of the editor, and not necessarily those of the WPA.
