Rant – The End…
This is my final rant.
I have been ranting for over five years in the Monday Mailing. And it is with profound sadness I state the following: the bond of trust and cooperation between schools (school leaders) and the Government has been mutilated.
The current Government is hell bound on control; they are 100% confident in the rightness of their cause so they choose not to listen to the profession. Regrettably, they have many hidden agenda which they are slowly progressing through. It is with genuine and profound sadness I state that the word of this Government cannot be trusted.
For example: National Standards – their flagship policy – has not made one iota of difference to the well-being or educational achievement of a child in New Zealand. It has caused huge non-productive workload for teachers; and huge frustration for school leaders. National Standards are the cornerstone of a right wing (GERM) policy that is failing world-wide.
So my final message to school leaders:
- Focus on the well-being of your pupils and staff - get this right and academic achievement will follow;
- Respond to policy announcements from the Government (and encourage your parents to) – you can do this by contacting your local MP, contacting the local media (after consulting with your Board chair), write to the Minister….
- Remember that your well-being is of paramount importance – Principalship is a job (albeit a hugely important one), it is not your whole life;
- Put time in to your family and friends – possibly the only thing more important than leading your school.
Note: Opinions expressed in The Rant are those of
the editor, Pat Poland; and not those of the WPA.

A Thought… Leadership
A Laugh
A woman and her husband interrupted their vacation to go to the dentist.
"I want a tooth pulled, and I don't want any pain killers because I'm in a big hurry," the woman said. "Just extract the tooth as quickly as possible, and we'll be on our way."
The dentist was quite impressed. "You're certainly a courageous woman," he said. "Which tooth is it?"
The woman turned to her husband and said, "Show him your tooth, dear."
