Rant - Funding

The funding schools are receiving from the Government is shrinking every year, in real terms. We are being expected to do more, with less. And Government legislation is making it even harder to find the money to run our schools.

Police Vetting - Under the Vulnerable Children’s Act, schools must have prospective employees Police Vetted. In addition, many schools feel obliged to Police Vet volunteers (camp, parent helpers in class, etc). Did you receive the email from the Police saying that they are introducing a users-pay scheme - $8.50 per vet? Will your school receive extra funding for this?

Chat to your local MP about this!

Scaffolding – New regulations under the Health and Safety Act require contactors to use scaffolding in nearly instance of building maintenance – such as painting. You can expect a significant increase in costs when it comes to repainting your school. Will your school receive extra funding for this?

Chat to your local MP about this!

Sound systems - Ten years ago our school installed sound systems in every classroom to ensure hearing-impaired children could hear what the teacher was saying. A couple of years ago, these systems were made illegal because of Government regulations impacting on available frequencies. The cost for our school to replace the systems – about $40,00 for eighteen classrooms.

The sound system in our hall has to replaced as well… $2,000.

Will we receive extra funding?

Let me know what other cost increases schools have incurred without recompense… principal@deanwell.school.nz.

It’s an election year. Maybe it is time we brought these issues into the public forum – including the parents in your school.

Leadership…

Shared reality, shared goals

The best way to persuade someone of your new approach is to begin with three agreements:

We agree on the goals. We both want the same outcomes, we're just trying different ways to get there.

We agree on reality. The world is not flat. Facts are actually in evidence. Statistics, repeatable experiments and clear evidence of causation are worth using as tools.

We agree on measurement. Because we've agreed on goals and reality, we agree on what success looks like as well.

All three allow us to enroll on the same journey, and to hold each other accountable for our work. Any other approach disrespects your partners and leaves you in a corner, without allies.
