WPA Road trip – Auckland

10-12 May

NZPF conference, Queenstown

19-22nd Sept 2017

We are looking at organising a large WPA delegation to attend the national conference.

http://www.nzpf.ac.nz/conference-2017.html

Reminder: Pay Your WPA Subs…

Please pay your WPA subscription as soon as possible by clicking here. This is even more important if you wish to take advantage of the subsidies provided on the WPA Road Trip, NZPF Conference, etc.

Ministry of Education Regional Expo

The regional expo will be open to all schools from 4pm on 16th May. The Ministry of Education is in the throes of organising invitations to go out to every school and kura and early childhood services so we have as many people as possible being able to see these tools and resources in action. I’d appreciate it if you could promote this through your regular bulletin as I agree the content will be excellent for all people – teachers, leaders, governors and parents.

There are sessions (separate to the expo) that are being organised on that same day and led by the Community of Learning Leads or key contact people for Kāhui Ako. The form of this session will be up to this group and I expect it will build on previous work that they have done.

So no exclusions and I’d appreciate it if you could put people right if you hear otherwise.

It is expected that mentors will provide support to beginning principals in their local area. The mentors will work in conjunction with the leadership advisors to provide a strong network of support for these principals. Please consider passing on your wisdom and giving back to your profession by mentoring a beginning principal. For further information you can contact Brian Sheedy at brians@tetotara.school.nz.

Rant – Money!!

Schools have a shrinking Operations Grant (in real terms). But we keep getting stung by the Ministry of Education and other government agencies….

  • A teacher is on ACC-approved medical leave for two terms. Our school has to continue to pay her, and the full-time relieving teacher. At the end of each term, we invoice ACC and they pay us 80% of her salary!! We have to wear 20%....
  • A child with a severe hearing deficit has special equipment… he loses part of it, so the school has to claim from our insurance company and pay the excess. The Ministry of Education then repays the school – less $100!!! Of course, the insurance company many not agree to settle because the child’s device is not school equipment and is not on our asset register….
  • NZ Fire Service… two false alarms in a 12 month period and they invoice a school for $1,000. So, a child with specific needs is cooking baked beans on toast; he burns something; the smoke detectors activate. Ka ching!! $1,000.

This is election year. Talk to your MP about things like this.

Hauora… Health & Happiness

3 Daily Habits of the Happiest People in the World

https://www.inc.com/joseph-pearlman/3-daily-habits-of-the-happiest-people-in-the-world.html

Operating as an active business professional in the age of social media is a tremendous challenge.

As much as the internet has aided in the streamlining of information and business processes, it has also exponentially increased the amount and intensity of competition.

This is undoubtedly a high stakes arena where the ability to properly prioritize can become skewed.

As a result, I notice a greater number of professionals delaying their immediate happiness or fiscal responsibility with remarks like:

If I break six figures this year, I'll start paying off my debts/saving for the future.
I'll be happy once we reach one million customers.
When I've made the Fortune 500, I'll know I've made it.

It's important to have goals, but the problem with the above statements is that they defer happiness and good habits away from the now and off into the future.

This is an example of how goals can obstruct one's daily sense of satisfaction and ability to be present and grateful.

Keep ambition as your friend and not your enemy by putting it in check.

There are so many outside forces beyond your control that you cannot hedge your happiness or self-esteem on.

Despite how fantastic your product is, or how flawless your value proposition, or your communication and pitching skills, you might still be outshone by someone who has more experience, better connections, or who plays golf with the boss.

Here is what you can actively do to keep your ambition in check:

1. Celebrate the imperfect success of today.

Don't fall into the trap of bemoaning how unfair business is or pushing your happiness to some pie-in-the-sky day.

Find pride in the life you are living right now, even if your business is still in the red.

As an adult, happiness is finding gratitude in spite of how imperfect everything is.

2. Center yourself.

Ambition is crucial for success, but too much of it means that you become obsessed with the end result.

Tenacity and grit allow you to focus moment by moment, so you maintain perspective.

After all, once you get to the top of that mountain, the view unfolds before you with a vast valley of new mountains, which all need to be conquered.

Refusing to be happy now in some ways means you're refusing to be happy ever, as there will always be a new set of challenges, obstacles, and stresses to wrestle with in the future.

Take a break and enjoy the sunset (with or without a cocktail). Play with a pet or go on a walk in nature or an urban hike around your city center. Or do whatever truly makes you happy.

Distancing yourself from your work for an hour in solitude can offer a wealth of perspective.

3. Exert control over what you actually have control over.

You have control over doing the best work that you are capable of. I help my clients find the fun in every moment, and effect maximum change in their audiences to catapult their careers to a level of success beyond their wildest dreams.

You also have control over whether you make fun, impactful choices in the course of your day--particularly ones that have a certain amount of calculated risk and potential danger.

Wherever you and your ambition aim to end up, be grateful for where you are right now and what you have right now.

The future doesn't belong to any of us. All you have is this moment.
