Is anyone willing to share their policies on Sexual harassment / harassment. These policies are currently up for review at our school and we would be interested in what other schools have documented.

Term 4 Catch Up Day - Cheryl Doig

Thursday November 4

Future focused schools: What and How?

Cheryl will take us on a quick romp into the world of exponential technologies and the global changing landscape; explore the implications for schools and leadership; and dig deeper into the trend towards collaboration. During all three sessions there will be a mix of 'deep dives', interaction with peers and development of strategies for your unique environment. No matter what sort of school setting you are in, you will be challenged and encouraged to move ideas to action.

9.10 - 10.10 An Outwards Mindset: Global Trends

Key drivers of change are forcing us to deconstruct our industrial model of education and remix it to meet the needs for a vastly different world. In this session Cheryl will explore the significant changes affecting the world, including the impact of Exponential Technologies. Are you personally and professionally aware of these? What are the implications for learners?

11.00 - 12.00 Leadership of a Learning Ecosystem

Leaders of the future will need to remix their capabilities, pivot like never before and embrace new relationships. We will explore the learning ecosystem of schooling and what this means for you as a leader of change in an increasingly complex world. What capabilities need to be developed, strengthened and abandoned? What about those who will be the leaders after you? Will your legacy be a liability or a springboard?

2.00 - 3.00 Leading Collaboration: What Really Matters

In the final session of the day we will focus on collaboration as one of the key ingredients of a learning ecosystem. What are the positives and pitfalls for schools, clusters and CoLs. Why might we collaborate and when? What are examples of successful collaboration in education and business? Where to next?

CORE Breakfast

The next CORE Breakfast is on 10 November with Janelle Riki-Waaka presenting a seminar and workshop session on Innovative Pathways for Māori achieving educational success as Māori.

The focus of this breakfast seminar will explore innovative ways that schools can create environments to empower Māori students and raise achievement for all students in the process. Janelle will discuss several avenues of support for school leaders and teachers to enhance their culturally responsive practices, and strengthen their relationships with Māori students and their whānau.

During the workshop, participants will be supported to develop a Responsiveness Plan for their schools aimed at empowering all learners and their whānau to engage with their school and feel empowered in all aspects of their achievement. We will also explore how schools can form stronger connections with students and their whānau through developing 'flipped' curriculum support and access to learning support outside of school hours.

Rant – A Positive

I am not a supporter of the political wing of NZSTA.

However, the NZSTA help desk is invaluable and I encourage Principals to use it for any legal issues you need support with – ranging from privacy issues to custody battle to help with complaints.

I email them rather than phone because that way I have their advice in writing.

Email them on govadvice@nzsta.org.nz, Helpdesk@nzsta.org.nz, or 0800 782 435 (Option 1).

Support for Leadership Announced

Further to my earlier concerns about the possibility of the First Time Principals being abandoned by the Ministry of Education… the information below is from the Ministry of Education website. It will be interesting to see how the final support package looks; for example, the "tailored, practical advice" sounds great. The potential for success is going to depend a lot on the level of funding and support; and the quality and expertise of the 'Leadership Advisors' (hard to beat experienced Principals as mentors/advisors so hopefully we will see lots of them take up this role, or be seconded from their current positions).

Effective leadership is crucial to successful outcomes for students, and is an important component of Professional Learning and Development (PLD).

The Ministry has been working with the Education Council to ensure there will be a coherent programme of support through its newly established Centre for Leadership Excellence.

While the Centre becomes established, the Ministry has developed an interim support package for leadership which will be in place for the next two years.

We have reviewed our centrally-funded support for school leaders, and designed our interim leadership support package based on what has worked well, what needs to work better, and feedback and ideas from the sector.

The leadership package will be less prescribed and more responsive to the needs of leadership in CoLs, schools and kura.

An RFP for the first of these components, Leadership Advisors, has been published on GETS, the governments' electronic tenders website.

Leadership Advisors will support beginning principals with tailored, practical advice at a regional level.

You can view the RFP in detail on GETS.

We will follow this up shortly with an RFP to procure support for emerging leaders in Communities of Learning. We will give you more information about this closer to the time this RFP goes out.

A Thought…

A Laugh

A baby turtle was standing at the bottom of a large tree and with a deep sigh, started to climb.

About an hour later, he reached a very high branch and walked along to the end. He turned and spread all four flippers and launched himself off the branch. On landing at the bottom in a pile of soft, dead leaves, he shook himself off, walked back to the bottom of the tree and with a sigh started to climb.

About an hour later, he again reached the very high branch, walked along, turned, spread his flippers and flung himself off the branch.

Again, he landed in the leaves, shook himself off, went to the bottom of the tree, sighed and started climbing.

Watching these proceedings from the end of the branch were two little birds. Mommy bird turned to Daddy bird and said, "Don't you think it's time we told him he was adopted?"
