Rant – Special Needs Funding

Yippee! $15,000,000 for special needs children, over 5 years. And an announcement of $25,000,000 for the Otago cycle trails. The Government has clear priorities!!

Core Breakfast!

The next CORE Breakfast is on 26 May. There has been a change in the original programme with Mark Osborne now presenting a seminar and workshop on the 'Maker Movement.'

http://www.events.core-ed.org/breakfast/future-focused-education-maker-movement-schools

The maker movement in schools aims to give kids the time, space and resources to become inventors. Prototyping tools have been too expensive for schools in the past, but now they are cheap enough for us to put them in the hands of kids and encourage them to solve problems they see in their world. Students can use tools like electronics, thermoplastics, robotics, programming, game design and 3D printing to unleash their creativity. Think of the maker movement in schools as being like joining granddad's shed to a startup incubator with some good old kiwi number 8 wire.

The seminar will explore the history and ethos of the maker movement, look at tools designed to foster creativity and provide practical examples of how to foster maker culture in education.

The workshop will provide opportunities for people to roll up their sleeves and explore a range of different maker tools such as sewable and squishy circuits, thermoplastics, simple robotics and programming and game design.

WaiMiE - Waikato Men in Education

Principals - Please pass the following information on to any male teachers in your school that may be interested in becoming involved with this initiative.

Key Objectives

  • Support networkfor Male Educators
  • Positive role models for our students
  • Professional development opportunities
  • Motivation to keep physically active

MiE Vision

Males in education are few and far between. Our vision is to create a network of male educators that support each other when required, catch up on a regular basis to share innovative, educational and future focused pedagogy, and combine to compete in sporting events, while showing our learning communities and students that we are positive role models.

MiE Philosophy

Connect, Collaborate and Celebrate, being 'Men in Education' through competition and comradery. Demonstrate to our students and school communities how important it is for boys/men to set goals, meet challenges, and cooperate in team situations. Give male teachers the opportunity to join a professional male support network across Waikato and New Zealand provinces.

WaiMiE 2016

We have had a very successful MiE network for the past two years and we plan to continue to work in a collaborative way, engage in dialogue around best practice, communicate on a regular basis and be involved in professional educational opportunities, as well as remain physically active by participating in a variety of sporting activities. In Term 3, the WaiMiE will travel to Napier to play a game of rugby and visit Hawkes Bay MiE schools for professional development. In Term 4 we are looking at establishing a cricket, touch, and golf challenge against other MiE networks. If you have any questions about the WaiMiE please email:
principal@matangi.school.nz

Training

We currently meet at Steele Park in Hamilton East on Sunday afternoons for a light training from 3pm followed by a meeting/rehydration at The Cook.

A Laugh

Baby Turtle

A baby turtle was standing at the bottom of a large tree and with a deep sigh, started to climb. About an hour later, he reached a very high branch and walked along to the end. He turned and spread all four flippers and launched himself off the branch. On landing at the bottom in a pile of soft, dead leaves, he shook himself off, walked back to the bottom of the tree and with a sigh started to climb.

About an hour later, he again reached the very high branch, walked along, turned, spread his flippers and flung himself off the branch. Again, he landed on the bottom, shook himself off, went to the bottom of the tree, sighed and started climbing.

Watching these proceedings from the end of the branch were two birds. The Momma bird turned to Daddy bird and said, "Don't you think it's time we told him he was adopted?"

From our Senior Citizen rep, Jeff Freeman at Knighton School:

Hi all, you will probably remember these from last year, which is the purpose of the exercise!

It's that time of year for us to take our annual senior citizen test.
Exercise of the brain is as important as exercise of the muscles. As we grow older, it's important to keep mentally alert. If you don't use it, you lose it!
Below is a very private way to gauge how your memory compares to the last test.
Some may think it is too easy, but the ones with memory problems may have difficulty.

Take the test presented here to determine if you're losing it or not.
The spaces below are so you don't see the answers until you've made your answer.

OK, relax, clear your mind and begin.

1. What do you put in a toaster?

Answer : 'bread.' If you said 'toast' give up now and do something else. Try not to hurt yourself.

If you said, bread, go to Question 2.

2. Say 'silk' five times. Now spell 'silk.' What do cows drink?

Answer : Cows drink water. If you said 'milk,' don't attempt the next question.

Your brain is overstressed and may even overheat. Content yourself with reading more appropriate literature such as Auto World.

However, if you said 'water', proceed to question 3.

3. If a red house is made from red bricks and a blue house is made from blue bricks and a pink house is made from pink bricks and a black house is made from black bricks, what is a green house made from?

Answer: Greenhouses are made from glass. If you said 'green bricks,' why are you still reading these??? If you said 'glass,' go on to Question 4.

4. Without using a calculator - You are driving a bus from London to Milford Haven in Wales . In London , 17 people get on the bus. In Reading, 6 people get off the bus and 9 people get on. In Swindon, 2 people get off and 4 get on. In Cardiff, 11 people get off and 16 people get on. In Swansea, 3 people get off and 5 people get on. In Carmathen, 6 people get off and 3 get on. You then arrive at Milford Haven ....

Without scrolling back to review, how old is the bus driver?

Answer : Oh, for crying out loud! Don't you remember your own age? It was YOU driving the bus!! (Go back and look!).

If you pass this along to your friends, pray they do better than you.

PS: 95% of people fail most of the questions!!

OK . . . Or just go have another glass of wine . . . Nothing will matter in a few hours . . ... And you will definitely NOT be driving the bus!! Maybe the porcelain bus!!
