Core Education Breakfast
The next Core Education Breakfast is on 5 November with Susan Ngawati Osbourne and Nigel Marshall presenting on Mana Potential - A culturally based tool for the development of positive change.
During the last three years the Mana Potential model has been used within a wide range of school settings including as:
- a tool used by teachers, school counsellors and deans to build self awareness and strategies around both academic and behavioural challenges
- a whole of class approach developing unity and cohesion
- a staff development tool to build a deeper understanding of the Māori world and rapport between staff and students
- a transition model in secondary schools for all year nine students
- training for some RTLB clusters (The Mana Potential Model is now being incorporated into the RTLB training programme at Massey University).

Gillingham Multi-Sensory Language Course
Many teachers struggle with the right approach to teaching their dyslexic students to read and write. There is much research which indicates a multi-sensory language approach is the most effective way to raise the achievement and literacy capability of these learners. We are hosting an Orton Gillingham multi-sensory language course in January (18 - 22nd in Te Awamutu). Please see the attached flyer for further information.

Tech Tip
The Snipping tool in Windows 7 is a tool I use every day. It is fantastic for capturing any part of your computer screen and then saving or pasting the clip.
You can access it by clicking the Start button, and type snipping in the search box.

Health & Happiness
Via the Huffington Post UK
People who think they have unlimited willpower are likely to be happier, a new study has shown.
Researchers found that those who believe they have increased willpower have a greater chance of feeling content with their lives and experience higher levels of wellbeing.
Meanwhile those who feel they have less willpower are likely to feel more stressed.
This, researchers believe, is because people who think they have unlimited willpower are better able to cope when life gets more demanding...
And the very good news, following on from the research referred to above, is that we can actually build our willpower. Just like a muscle, if we "work out" we can become stronger! And here's a few tips for how you can achieve this...
- To begin with, take care of your health and wellbeing (including getting adequate sleep). It's hard to "be strong" if you're tired all the time
- Meditate and focus on positive outcomes - focusing more on what you want, rather than trying to avoid what you don't want, will help point you in the right direction
- Predict and plan for distractions and/or temptations - this isn't a negative strategy but rather, a realistic one. Problems will occur but if you've prepared for them you'll have a better chance of dealing with them effectively
- Regularly remind yourself of the advantages you'll gain when you achieve what you want to achieve (this is where motivation comes from!)
- And finally, reward yourself for every step you take in the right direction (no matter how small)!
