Gillingham Multi Sensory Language Course

Many teachers struggle with the right approach to teaching their dyslexic students to read and write. There is much research which indicates a multi sensory language approach is the most effective way to raise the achievement and literacy capability of these learners. We are hosting an Orton Gillingham multi sensory language course in January (18 - 22nd in Te Awamutu). Please see the attached flyer for further information.

Rant - Funding…

http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/education/72605207/student-achievement-to-be-used-to-fund-schools-under-new-model

Is it within the domain of sanity for the Government to base school funding on National Standards results? What madness is this? While I acknowledge there are financial inequities in the current decile funding system that need tweaking, the goal is laudable – place resources where they are most needed.

The Government may not be aware of it, but many children entering lower decile schools bring significantly less to their learning than children in higher decile schools. For example, they score significantly lower on assessment tasks in SEA. Lower decile schools need additional resourcing to accelerate the learning of their children.

Perhaps the Government is planning to base the funding on proven acceleration of children along the farcical National Standards achievement trail; fund schools where a significant number of children move from ‘below’ to ‘at’. Wow! This would see a tremendous boost to NS results. The Government would look very good, being able to trumpet the success of their NS policy. Wouldn’t be so good for schools where the majority of children are already ‘above standard’… can’t accelerate them so funding would suffer!

Give extra funding to the schools who least need it, and take from those who have a proven need?

Nope. This is madness.
